Gilda

The Bringer of Sunny Intervals

Probably the best-known of the WeatherGens, along with Brellina.  Gilda represented sunny intervals.

Her name may have been derived from "gilding" - a number of decorative techniques for applying fine gold leaf or powder to solid surfaces such as wood, stone, or metal to give a thin coating of gold. A gilded object is described as "gilt".

Gilda certainly was golden - a ray of sunshine shining through cumulus clouds.

She was played by actress Selina Giles (above).  The costume of Gilda required 2,000 sequins and two-and-a-half kilos of sequin dust in the crinoline.

Gilda, along with Norwin, Nimbella and Brellina, also has the honour of having two different idents - the first, known as "Normal Version" and a second one known as "Showers Version" - the latter used when rain was expected later in the day.  In the first the music is typically cheerful, as expected of sunshine, whilst in the second, the mood is far gloomier, as the rainclouds block out Gilda's sunlight.  It is little touches like these that made these idents so memorable.

After playing Gilda, Selina went on to star in "V for Vendetta" (as Evey's Mother), "Bugs" "Hotel Babylon" and other roles.  'Gensfans will always fondly remember her as the Sun Queen, more than anything else.  As well as an actress, Selina is a scriptwriter, and in 2004 fronted a campaign for the high street store Principles, along with Joely Richardson.

We'd love to hear from Selina on what it was like to star as Gilda, if anyone knows her please get in touch if you have any info!

In my books, Gilda is the leader of the WeatherGens and her powers are strongest during the vernal equinox.  She also controls a pack of Sun Dogs, whom she has trained to help her spread clouds through the sky.  Gilda is wise and calm and the one whom everyone turns to in a crisis.  She stores sunlight in her body and always has a glowing aura.  Her body glows brighter the happier she is and fades when she is sad.
