Brellina

Always Ready to Rain on your Parade

Along with Gilda, Brellina the Rain WeatherGen was the one that appeared most frequently on our screens thanks to the UK's notoriously rainy climate!

Brellina was played by Australian model Kate McGurgan (below), and filming the ident was quite a challenge.

She had to climb into a 20ft wide skirt made up of hundreds of black brollies!
Kate was chosen to play Brellina because of her big green eyes.

Four pairs of false eyelashes made them wider, but they had to be stuck back on every five takes because the fountain spouting from the top of her head washed off the glue!
The skirt was held together with miles of Sellotape but nearly came unstuck when it came to turning on the tap.

100 kilowatts of electricity were running through the studio. All those cables around the floor... and Kate trussed up in the middle of a huge puddle. It was controlled panic - but Kate was a good sport and brought Brellina to life superbly.

Brellina's name is pretty obvious - in case you hadn't guessed, it is derived from umBRELLa. :-)

Brellina also had two versions of her ident - normal and storm version, like Norwin.

In my books Brellina's powers are strongest during April - as she brings all those April showers!  She has an army of magical umbrellas who obey her every move.  Brellina has a mischievous personality and enjoys punishing anyone who annoys her with water torture.  She can be very bossy but also a good friend when times are tough.  Brellina is very assertive and stands up to bullies and troublemakers - don't get on the wrong side of her or you'll be flooded out!

I was honoured to be able to chat to Kate herself recently, thanks to the wonders of social networking.  She now lives in New York.  I can confirm that Kate has fond memories of being a 'Gen.  She and Angela Dunn (Nimbella) are also good friends.
